Introduction to Korea: A Land of Tradition and Modernity
Why I Created This Content
Dear Global,
I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share something personal with you. As a Korean who has worked abroad, I’ve met many people from different backgrounds. One of the first questions they often ask me is whether I am Chinese or Japanese. Only afterward do they inquire about my actual nationality. When I tell them I am Korean, some finally recognize Korea, while others even ask, "Is Korea part of China?"
Of course, I understand that not everyone thinks this way. Some people are well-informed about Korea’s location and culture, while others have little to no knowledge. I have met many foreigners who mistakenly believe that kimchi is a Chinese dish, hanbok is Chinese clothing, or that gimbap originates from Japan. These encounters have made me realize the importance of sharing the truth about my country and its rich heritage.
That’s why I decided to create this content. For the next three months, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I will introduce various aspects of Korea in English. Through this, I hope to help more people learn about Korea’s history, culture, and traditions.
I appreciate your support and curiosity about my country. Let’s take this journey together!
Best regards,
Sue Park.
Introduction to Korea: A Land of Tradition and Modernity
South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea (ROK), is a fascinating country where ancient traditions seamlessly blend with cutting-edge modernity. Located in East Asia, on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, it shares a border with North Korea and is surrounded by China and Japan. With a rich history spanning thousands of years, Korea has developed a unique culture, language, and way of life that captivates visitors from around the world.
A Brief History
Korea’s history dates back to ancient times, with early kingdoms such as Goguryeo[고구려], Baekje[백제], and Silla[신라] forming the foundation of Korean civilization. The unification of these kingdoms and subsequent dynasties, such as Goryeo[고려] (from which the name ‘Korea’ originates) and Joseon[조선], shaped Korea’s identity and traditions. The country went through periods of colonization and war by Japan in the 20th century, but today, South Korea stands as a prosperous and technologically advanced nation.
The Korean Language and Hangul [한글]
One of Korea’s most unique features is its language. Korean is spoken by around 75 million people worldwide. The Korean writing system, Hangul [한글], was invented by King Sejong the Great[세종대왕] in the 15th century to increase literacy among common people. Hangul is widely praised for its scientific and logical design, making it one of the most accessible alphabets to learn.
Culture and Traditions
Despite rapid modernization, Korea has preserved its deep-rooted traditions. Visitors can experience hanbok[한복] (traditional Korean clothing), tea ceremonies, and historic sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace[경복궁] in Seoul. Traditional holidays such as Seollal[설날] (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok[추석] (Korean Thanksgiving) are still widely celebrated.
Technology and Innovation
South Korea is a global leader in technology, home to companies like Samsung, Hyundai, and LG. The country boasts one of the fastest internet speeds in the world, leading advancements in AI, robotics, and entertainment. Cities like Seoul and Busan showcase Korea’s futuristic urban landscape, filled with high-tech infrastructure and efficient public transportation.
Hallyu[한류]: The Korean Wave
Korea’s influence in pop culture has spread worldwide through K-pop, K-dramas, and Korean films. Groups like BTS and BLACKPINK have gained massive global recognition, while movies and drama such as Parasite and Squid Game have introduced Korean storytelling to international audiences.
Korean Food: A Culinary Adventure
No introduction to Korea is complete without mentioning its food. Korean cuisine, known for its bold flavors and healthy ingredients, features iconic dishes such as kimchi, bibimbap, bulgogi, and tteokbokki. Korean BBQ and street food culture also provide a unique and delicious experience for food lovers.
Why Visit Korea?
South Korea offers something for everyone—history enthusiasts, tech lovers, foodies, and K-pop fans alike. Whether you explore the bustling streets of Seoul, hike through scenic mountains, or relax in traditional hanok stays, Korea is a destination that never fails to impress.
